Abstract Details

Purpose:

Primary tumors of the cornea are rare. Most often, the discovery of a corneal tumor corresponds to the extension of a conjunctival tumor, in particular limbic. They develop like those of the conjunctiva from either the epithelium or the stroma. The hamartoma is a tumor-like malformation that occurs during the development of the fetus. It consists of a set of tissues that have developed in a disorderly way.In this case report, a brief description of a corneal hamartoma.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Mohamed VI University Hospital of Marrakech

Methods:

we report a very rare case of corneal hamartoma.

Results:

A 17day-old female baby was referred to us for congenital conjunctivo-corneal outgrowth of the left eye evolving from birth and gradually increasing in volume. The examination shows a conjunctivo-corneal protrusion centered on the limb.It extends to the center of the cornea. It is firm soft and immobile covered with smooth skin. Examination of the other eye is normal. The pediatric examination did not reveal any associated general abnormalities. The management consisted in a complete excision of the tumor with reconstruction by an amniotic membrane graft. Anatomopathological examination of the operative specimen revealed dystrophic and inflammatory changes suggestive of hamartoma in the first place.

Conclusions:

The tumors of the cornea are considered by the majority of authors as rare affections. We report the case of a corneal hamartoma. Hamartoma is considered as a developmental error and can occur at a number of sites, corneal localization is very rare. The tumors of the cornea can be impressive by their appearance and the speed of their development, the histological confirmation of the benignity of these lesions is always welcome to reassure the patient and the doctor.
