Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the intraoperative compli¬cations of cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX).
Setting:
Our study included patients who were reffered for cataract surgery in Clinic for ophthalmology, Clinical Centre Kragujevac, from1st Jan 2018 untill 1st Jan 2019.
Methods:
Our study included 108 patients with Pex, but without XFG. All patients underwent phacoemuslification with intraocular lens implnatation by one surgeon. We studied and noted the intraoperative and postoperative complications, one day afetr the surgery.
Results:
The mean age of the patients was 61.60 years +/ - 10.21 years. Males were 48% (n=52). The mean pupil dilation was 5.8 mm +/ - 1.32 mm. On the first postoperative day mean visual acuity of the patients was 20/60 and the mean intraocular pressure was noted to be 28.23 mmHg +/ - 15.40 mmHg. Five cases had a zonular dialysis intraoperatively due to weak zonules. Ten patiens had high anterior chamber reaction of 2+ or more. Three cases had sphincter tears and one case had iridodialysis superiorly during nucleus delivery. Four patiens had postoperative hyphaema.
Conclusions:
Intraoperative complications should be anticipated in patients with pseudoexfoliation even without glaucomatous changes due to poor pupillary dilation and zonular weakness. First postoperative day visual acuity in pseudoexfoliation patients undergoing cataract surgery was found to be low due to severe anterior chamber inflammation causing elevated intraocular pressure and corneal edema or hyphaema.
