Intracameral levofloxacin administration during phacoemulsification to prevent post operative infection in rural eye care

Purpose:
To determine the efficacy of intracameral Levofloxacin during phacoemulsification in prevention of post operative infection
Setting:
SMEC Belawan Eye Care, Belawan, North Sumatera, Indonesia
Methods:
1016 eyes of 791 patients underwent uneventful phacoemulsifacition and had been given intracameral 0.1 mg of 0.1 ml Levofloxacin administration at near ending of time of the surgery.
Results:
The incident of post operative infection went down to 2 cases of 1016 surgeries. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) got better after 1 month post-surgery (P < 0.0001) compared with pre-surgery BCVA. 1 month median BCVA was 0.8
Conclusions:
Intracameral Levofloxacin during phacoemulsification maybe helpful to prevent post operative infection in rural eye care
