Abstract Details
Purpose:
To present a case of phacoemulsification in a patient with distorted pupil and a sizeable iris cyst.
Setting:
1st Department of Ophthalmology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, G.Gennimatas Hospital
Methods:
Case presentation. A 65-year-old patient with cataract and a large iris cyst was treated surgically in a single operation with iris cyst drainage, pupil expansion, posterior synechiae lysis and phacoemulsification with intraocular lens placement.
Results:
The surgery was uneventful. Postoperative visual acuity was 9/10, intraocular pressure was 17 mmHg, intraocular lens was centrally fixated and the patient showed no signs of relapse of the iris cyst.
Conclusions:
Combining phacoemulsification and intraocular lens placement with simple drainage of the iris cyst, though surgically challenging, provides a viable treatment for patients presenting with cataract and concurrent iris cyst.
