Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the effects of Burst or Pulse modes on total ultrasound (U/S) delivery time with Stellaris phacoemulsification machine.
Setting:
Hippocratio general hospital. Athens Greece.
Methods:
24 patients that underwent cataract surgery included in this study. We compared two types of ultrasound delivery: first , the Burst type which consists of fixed ultrasound power delivery during a pre-determined fixed duration and second, the Pulse type. This one consists of linear ultrasound power with fixed interval between pulses. We also assessed the density of cataract, the maximum of the (U/S) power applied, the bottle height and the vacuum.
Results:
12 eyes were operated with burst and 12 with pulse. We did not find statistically significant differences between the two types of (U/S) delivery. However, the mean level of vacuum was higher in the burst group than in the pulse group.
Conclusions:
Comparing the two types of ultrasound delivery (Burst and Pulse) we did not detect one's superiority over the other.
