Abstract Details

Purpose:

To illustrate the practical results, advantages and challenging cases of IOL power calculations with both common methodologies as well as with UniversIOL, a calculator that integrates sphere and toric calculations and offer multiple modalities and ranking across manufactures.

Setting:

Medifeye Institute, a private clinic in Athens Greece

Methods:

6 cases of IOL power calculations with unusual aspects (high astigmatism, amblyopia, young patient with no cataract at fellow eye, etc) are presented and the IOL power calculation decision process with standard calculators as well as UniversIOL are performed and the methodologies and results compared.

Results:

The environment offered by UniversIOL allowed ready comparison, decision making and accurate results. Examples include 1) Cross manufacturers ranking of sphere and toric IOL choice 2) Accurate toric calculations with options and methodology 3) Direct side by side comparison of using (updates) Wang Koch adjustment for long eyes 4) Rank order of lenses based on selected criteria 5) Formula spread function to indicate likelihood of deviation from target The individual cases are discussed including the surgical results.

Conclusions:

The integrated environment of UniverIOL offers the surgeon powerful practical tools to improve patient outcomes especially in difficult and subtle surgical challenges requiring accurate refractive results.
