Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe the clinical characteristics of a Y-sutural cataract
Setting:
Hassan II university hospital, Department A of ophthalmology, Fez, Morocco
Methods:
we report the clinical observation of a patient, who consulted in our training at the university hospital center for a decrease in visual acuity. Detailed ophthalmological examination, including slit-lamp examination and photography of lens to record the cataract type, was registered.
Results:
We report the clinical observation of a 6-year-old patient with no significant pathological history. Who consults for a bilateral decrease visual acuity. The ophthalmologic examination of both eyes found visual acuity at 8/10, the exam of the anterior segment found a clear cornea with Y-shaped crystalline opacities, the exam of the posterior segment is without abnormality.
Therapeutically, the sutural cataract is not very progressive, and rarely require intervention because the effect on the vision is minimal. An optical correction by telescope was prescribed to this patient, with an improvement of the visual acuity at 10/10 in both eyes.
Conclusions:
In children, cataract causes more visual disability than any other form of treatable blindness. Sutural cataract is defined as an opacity affecting the whole or part of the anterior or posterior suture of one or both eyes. Most sutural cataracts have been reported to be congenital without progression.
