Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine whether cataract surgery increases macular thickness in diabetic patients without preoperative retinopathy or macular edema
Setting:
Ophthalmology department, Mohammed 6 hospital, Marrakech, Morocco
Methods:
In a prospective, non-controlled study, we compared preoperative macular thickness as measured by OCT to that measured 1 , 3 and 6 months after cataract surgery
Results:
105 eyes of patients (59 men and 46 women) were included in the study from November 2017 to aout 2018.
Average age of our patients was 64 years. Mean foveolar thickness measured preoperatively was 196μm (±19.5μm) compared with 204μm (±17.2μm) 3 months postoperatively and 216μm (±17.6μm) 6 months postoperatively.
Conclusions:
Cataract surgery in diabetic patients without preoperative retinopathy does not appear to induce significant macular thickening compared to non-diabetic patients. The period prior to any diabetic retinopathy or maculopathy seems to be the most amenable to cataract surgery when necessary.
