Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the visual and refractive outcomes following implantation of a light adjustable intra ocular lens (LAL) during cataract surgery.
Setting:
The Ayrshire Eye Clinic
Broomfield House
3 Broomfield Road
Ayr
Scotland
KA7 2SP.
Methods:
Single center, prospective interventional case series. 20 eyes of 10 subjects underwent bilateral implantation of LAL during cataract surgery with standard phacoemulsification performed through a temporal 3.00 clear corneal wound. Post operatively subjects were seen at day 1 and underwent 2 to 3 post operative light adjustment treatment following manifest refraction with a light delivery device to achieve emmetropia between week 2 and week 5 postoperatively. Once emmetropia was achieved a final light treatment was performed to lock in the refractive target.
Results:
There were no intra or post operative complications. Following the post operative light adjustment and lock in treatment 70 % achieved uncorrected distance visual (UDVA) of 20/16 or better, 88 % achieved UDVA of 20/20 or better and 100 % achieved UDVA of 20/25 or better.
Conclusions:
Light adjustable IOLs provide very precise refractive outcomes following cataract surgery. In this cohort all subjects achieved spectacle independence for distance vision.
