Abstract Details
Purpose:
To found safety and efficacy provided by a minimal and localized anesthesia in cataract surgery
Setting:
University hospital of Messina
Methods:
Hundred patients who underwent elective cataract surgery were enrolled and divided into two groups. Before starting surgery, group 1 received conventional topical anesthesia with preservative-free Oxibuprocaine hydrochloride 0.4% eyedrop, while in group 2 anesthesia was performed with minimal localized anaesthesia, administered with a cotton bud soaked in preservative-free Oxibuprocaine hydrochloride 0.4% applied to clear cornea only at the incision sites for 10 seconds immediately before surgery. Localized anesthesia started as soon as the patient was stretched out on the operating table, before monitoring and preparation were completed. Each patient was given a pain score.
Results:
All patients well tolerated the procedure, giving pain scores between 1–3. Fifteen patients (30 %) of group 1 and ten of group 2 (25%) required supplemental anesthesia. No intraoperative complications were recorded. No eyes had epithelial defects at the end of surgery or at postoperative check-up.
Conclusions:
topographical anesthesia in cataract surgery resulted safe and effective.
