Abstract Details
Purpose:
the aim of this study is to find the safer surgical approach to cataract surgery on eyes with prior radial keratotomy.
Setting:
This is a Prospective randomized study, conducted at University Hospital of Messina from January 2015 to May 2019.
Methods:
In a group of 40 patients have been evaluated 51 eyes with 16 incisions RK to submit to phacoemulsification for cataract. Samples were divided into two groups: Group 1 received a modified surgery added with pre-operative one corneal stitch along radial keratotomy incisions near main access site instead Group 2 received a modified surgery added with two corneal stitches.
Results:
After surgery have been evaluated visual acuity, corneal hysteresis and corneal strength. In all cases we found out an increased visual acuity. Data didn’t show a statistically significant difference in after surgery visual acuity between the two groups, but showed a significant difference in corneal hysteresis, respectively with values of 8.65± 1.6 in group 1 and 9.2± 1.8 in group 2, and in corneal resistance factor with values of 8.65± 1.6 mmHg in the first group and 7.87± 1.4 mmHg in the second one.
Conclusions:
Double safe stitch technique offers a better stabilization of corneal structure during surgery in patients preventively treated with 16 incisions RK and It also improves the riduction of corneal astigmatism after surgery.
