Abstract Details
Purpose:
Our aim was to evaluate the causes for cancellation of cataract surgeries in a tertiary hospital. We have wanted to determine the rate of ocular infections in the cancellation reasons that may cause devastating result when underestimated.
Setting:
Uludag University, School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology
Methods:
Cancellation causes of the cataract surgery candidates between 2018 October and 2019 October were retrospectively reviewed. Seventy four patients who planned for cataract surgery were canceled from over 1200 cataract surgery candidates in a year.
Results:
Mean age of 74 patients was 66±14 year old. Five had been planned for under general anesthesia and 69 under local anesthesia. Systemic causes were the reason of 42% and ocular causes 20% of the all cancellations. Nineteen percent were cancelled because of patient could not stand for local anesthesia; and sent for general anesthesia. Thirty six percent were cancelled for cardiac problems and patients were sent to Cardiology Department. 18% were canceled for ocular infections; and 38% of those were dacryocystitis, 38% of those were blepharitis, 24% were conjunctivitis.
Conclusions:
Ocular infections may cause endophthalmitis if can not be recognized and treated appropriately. Preoperative ophthalmic examination is crucial for determining ocular infections in cataract surgery candidates.
