Abstract Details

Purpose:

A reported case of a cerulean cataract , its clinical description and treatment

Setting:

MED V Military Hospital

Methods:

we report a case of 17 year old patient, presented to the consultation center, with one month history of pruritus, redness and progressive loss of vision in both eyes, Best corrected visual acuity was 20/30 in the right and left eye

Results:

Slit-lamp examination revealed a bilateral moderate allergic conjunctivitus  associated with multiple blue coloured opacities spread throughout the cortex of the lens in both eyes, the intraocular pressure was14 mmHG in the OD and 16 mmHG in the OS ,the fundus examination was unremarkabale in ODS. on further questioning, the patient  reported that a relative had cataracts from a young age

Conclusions:

Given the appearance, bilateral nature, and family history, her cataracts are most likely a variant of cerulean cataracts.. in this case the therapeutic management consisted in the medical treatment of the allergic conjunctivitis and periodic evaluation of vision acuity to decide the opportune moment to to remove the lens surgically.
