Abstract Details
Purpose:
To present a case of vitrectomy and fragmatome lensectomy with scleral-fixated intraocular lens (IOL) placement, in an 8-year-old boy with bilateral Ectopia Lentis associated with Marfan Syndrome.
Setting:
1st Department of Ophthalmology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, G. Gennimatas Hospital
Methods:
Case presentation. An 8-year-old boy diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, presented with bilateral superotemporal crystalline lens dislocation. He underwent vitrectomy, fragmatome lensectomy and scleral-fixated IOL (Carlevale) placement in the right eye.
Results:
The surgery was uncomplicated. Three months postoperatively the IOL was centrally fixated, intraocular pressure was 15mmHg, visual acuity was 9/10 unaided and fundus examination was unremarkable.
Conclusions:
Removal of the dislocated lens combined with vitrectomy and scleral-fixated IOL placement, though challenging surgically, was a viable alternative to treat Marfan syndrome associated ectopia lentis, with excellent postoperative results and no intraoperative or immediate postoperative complications.
