Abstract Details
Purpose:
The calculation of the intraocular lens implant is a very important step before cataract surgery, but we could have some postoperative refractive surprises affecting the visual acuity. Should we explant the IOL or the piggyback implantation will be better in this cases?
Setting:
CHP Sidi Othmane
Methods:
We report a case of a patient who had a cataract surgery 2 months before consulting because of his low vision.
This patient had 1 year before a detachment retinal surgery (with silicone oil injection).
IOL calculation was done regardless of the presence of Silicone oil, the patient had an IOL power of -2D.
VA without correction = hand motion
Refraction = +17
VA with correction +17 = 5/10
We decided instead of explant the IOL to make a piggyback implantation.
Results:
The patient was referred for ablation of Silicone oil.
1 month after, VA with correction +13 = 5/10.
We know that: 22 D implant = 13 D glasses
So the IOL power = + 22 D.
Piggyback implantation in the sulcus with an IOL MA60AC (Alcon) 3 pieces acrylic hydrophobic was done.
1 week after surgery, VA without correction = 5/10.
Conclusions:
The piggyback implantation is a good and easy technic in case of postoperative refractive surprises.
