Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of this study is to relate the epidemiological, clinical, risk factors and management of secondary glaucoma in children operated for congenital cataract.
Setting:
Ophtalmology Department, Mohamed VI University hospital, Marrakech, Morocco
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective study within a period of 5 years from September 2013 to January 2018. We included all children under 15 years, followed for glaucoma secondary to congenital cataract surgery.
Results:
We included 14 children (16 eyes). The diagnosis of glaucoma was made considering the appearance of a high papillary excavation in 9 eyes and corneal edema in 7 eyes. The ocular tension was higher than 20 mmHg in 9 eyes and between 16 and 20 mmhg in other eyes. Glaucoma was bilateral in 2 cases. The average age of children at the time of surgery was 13 months. Primary implantation was performed in 55% of the cases. Therapeutic management initially consisted on hypotonizing medical treatment in mono or triple therapy. The use of trabeculectomy was necessary in 3 cases.
Conclusions:
The management of secondary glaucoma is tough. The visual prognosis is compromised. Special attention and monitoring is essential in the long term after congenital cataract surgery.
