Abstract Details

Purpose:

review the recent evidence on epidemiological aspects of risk factors after cataract surgery to improve our management in terms of prophylaxis and therapeutic means.

Setting:

Our work is to do a retrospective study with literature review on a decline of four years (from september 2015 to september2019) in the ophthalmology department of the Avicenne military hospital of Marrakech  about six cases of endophthalmitis post-cataract surgery.

Methods:

For this, all our patients underwent a vitreous sampling to find the causative bacteria and do an ultrasound in B-mode. In therapeutic area all our patients received as in usual antibiotics and intravitreal injection of Vancomycin and Ceftazidime.

Results:

Our study highlights the importance of good peroperative prophylaxis in order to avoid postoperative complications. It also allowed us to find similarities between the different deadlines of appearance and causative bacteria for better therapeutic orientation. Our functional results are not superimposable to those of the literature, however our prognosis is moderately good, as 83% of our patients saw their visual acuity improve.

Conclusions:

This study allows to consider the prospects of a strict adaptation of asepsis and antisepsis in respect of the ophthalmic surgical techniques and implant material used. But our hope remains the antibiotic Cefuroxime by the end of surgery that has proven so far to be effective in preventing endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in our department.
