Abstract Details

Purpose:

The goal was to measure the quality of life of patients with senile cataract and cross-cultural adaptation of the NEI-VFQ-25 scale.

Setting:

Unity of ophtalmology adult, , Hospital 20 aout 1953, Hospital Univesity IBN ROCHD, Faculty of medecin and pharmacy, University Hassan II, Casablanca

Methods:

The survey included patients with senile cataract, aged 65 years and older. Recruitment of participants was done from consultation. An investigation sheet containing socio-demographic and clinical data and the Moroccan version of the NEI VFQ-25 quality of life questionnaire; were administered to each patient. The internal reliability of the NEI VFQ-25 scale was estimated by the Cronbach alpha coefficient. The comparison of the scores was done using the Student's test and the association of the scores with the visual acuity was studied by the correlation coefficients.

Results:

A total of 100 patients were enrolled including 50% men with an average age of 72.17 (SD = 5.8310). The majority of patients had visual acuity less than 1/10 and the mean visual acuity after extracapsular extraction with correction was 7.5 with a standard deviation of 2.64 and after phaco-emulsification was of 9.8 with a standard deviation of 0.49. The internal coherence of the global scale was very satisfactory (alpha coefficient = 0.86). The average VFQ25 score was better in the operated patients (p = 0.029), and especially in the case of phacoemulsification (p = 0.029).

Conclusions:

The senile cataract had a real impact on the quality of life of our patients, the surgical management allowed to improve the overall scores and a large number of dimensions.
