Purpose:

Senile cataract is still today in Morocco the main cause of blindness. The oldest technique, known since antiquity and practiced until the nineteenth century in Europe, was to crystallize in the vitre thanks to a stylet in the eye at the level of the sclera. This technique of lowering the lens, called "dadsie" in Morocco, is unlikely, still persists in some countries that cause irreversible damage. the objective of this work is to study the complications of this technique

Setting:

Mohammed VI University Hospital Center oujda morocco

Methods:

A dozen cases (12) of who were treated by couching have been collected at the ophthalmology department during the last 2 years.

Results:

The average age of patients is 70, all are illiterate; "Dadsie" was bilateral in 10% of cases; visual acuity after correction was less than 1/10 in 85% of cases; patients became monophthalmic in 45% of cases. Complications are mainly represented by panophthalmia which led to evisceration in 30% of cases, but also corneal dystrophy, present in more than half of the cases, ocular hypertension, vitreous organization and detachment of retina.

The conclusions of this work highlight the danger faced by patients who are victims of this archaic practice that still exists in several developing countries.
