Abstract Details

Purpose:

Case report of the world first surgery to correct astigmatism by rotating lenticule created by relex smile

Setting:

Gemini Eye Clinics, Czech Republic

Methods:

Left ambylopic eye of 31 years old woman with distance refraction +2 -5 ax 10° underwent innovative corneal laser refractive surgery. A corneal lenticule created by VisuMax (Carl Zeiss Meditec) laser intended for -3 -3 ax 10° with optical zone 6,5mm and transition zone 0,1mm and minimal thickness 30 µm was rotated 90° to correct astigmatism.

Results:

Preoperative subjective distance refraction +2 -5 ax 10° changed to -4 Dsf and 0 Dcyl at 1 week follow up. So the preoperative subjective astigmatism -5 ax 10° decreased to 0 D cyl. The preoperative corneal astigmatism K2-K1 of 5 Dcyl decreased to 0,5 D cyl. Anyhow the subjective spherical refraction moved from -0,5 D sf. eq. by myopic shift to -4,0 D sf. Preop CDVA 0,2 improved to 0,3 at 1 week follow up.

Conclusions:

The lenticule rotation is a new surgical method for correction of high astigmatism. The very first clinical result shows that it has a potential to correct high astigmatism. A longer follow up on higher number of patients is needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of this procedure.
