Abstract Details

Purpose:

Traumatic cataract is a serious condition that usually affects children and young adults. It may be secondary to a trauma or puncture. Its prognosis is mainly related to lesions associated in particular those of the posterior segment. The purpose of our work is to identify the clinical and therapeutic peculiarities of traumatic cataracts through a retrospective study

Setting:

Adult ophtalmology department , 20 August hospital , ibn rochd university hospital faculty of medicine and pharmacy Hassan 2 university of casablanca Morocco

Methods:

we reviewed the observations of 260 patients operated for traumatic cataract in Ophthalmology between 2015 and 2019. We identified the circumstances of the trauma, the initial clinical examination and the urgent or delayed therapeutic modalities undertaken

Results:

The average age was 35 years (2-72 years), 25% of the cases were children. There were 78 women and 182 men. The trauma was contusive in 45% of cases and perforating in 55% of cases. Final visual acuity was <1/10 in 45% of cases because of corneal scars or posterior segment lesions.

Conclusions:

Traumatic cataract has therapeutic and prognostic problems with socioeconomic impact. The results often depend more on the associated lesions of the eyeball than on the cataract itself
