Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare two different trifocal lenses, RayOne Trifocal (Rayner Surgical, UK) and AT Lisa Tri 839 MP (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany).
Setting:
Vienna Institute for Ocular Surgery (VIROS), a Karl-Landsteiner Institut, Hanusch Krankenhaus, Vienna, Austria
Methods:
In this randomized, double-masked trial, we included patients with planned cataract surgery for both eyes who were motivated to be less spectacle dependent. Pre-operatively, 1 week and 3 months post-operatively auto-refraction as well as subjective refraction were performed. Additionally, uncorrected and corrected near, intermediate and distance visual acuity was evaluated at the 3-months follow-up. Also, reading speed (Salzburg Reading Test, SRD Vision), defocus curve, quality of vision questionnaire, purkinjemeter- and halometer-measurements as well as contrast sensitivity were assessed.
Results:
Data of 88 eyes of 44 patients showed no statistically significant difference 3 months postoperatively between the uncorrected or corrected near, intermediate and distant visual acuity of the two IOLs (uncorrected near (Ray: 0.22 logMAR; Lisa: 0.23 logMAR) / intermediate (Ray: 0.25 logMAR; Lisa: 0.24 logMAR) / distant (Ray: -0.04 logMAR; Lisa: -0.01 logMAR) visual acuity p=0.429 / p=0.602 / p=0.120; corrected near (Ray: 0.22 logMAR; Lisa: 0.24 logMAR) / intermediate (Ray: 0.26 logMAR; Lisa: 0.24 logMAR) / distant (Ray: -0.03 logMAR; Lisa: -0-06 logMAR) visual acuity p=0.289 / p=0.549 / p=0.134, Wilcoxon signed rank test).
Conclusions:
Both trifocal IOLs seem to have comparable visual outcomes 3 months postoperatively. There were no complications, neither peri- nor post-operatively.
