Abstract Details

Purpose:

the purpose of this work: to study the clinical aspect , to analyze the anatomical and functional results of our treatment.

Setting:

Congenital cataract is the most common cause of preventable blindness in children. Its management is the priority of the VISION 2020 program: the right to sight, the initiative of OMS , and the  IAPB at the international level Affection relatively frequent in pediatric ophthalmological pathology in our course

Methods:

A retrospective study at the pediatric ophthalmology service 20Aout Casablanca  from January 2010 to January  2019  (9 years ) Out of 516 children with congenital cataract ,306 children (60%) had  bilateral congenital cataract, •Were included in this study : All Bilateral Congenital Cataract cases regardless of age of discovery and management •Exclusion criteria: Unilateral congenital cataract , Ectopia   lentis All children had a complete ophthalmological examination +/- examination under anesthesia Ocular ultrasound B: biometric and diagnostic goal. SRKT / SRK II formula

Results:

Average age 22 months Reason for consultation :leukocoria 73% the most predominant type  of cataract was total white(37%) Etiological investigation was negative in 71% of cases As for the treatment, the surgical indication was indicated in 93% of cases, the technique ; anterior capsulorhexis , phacoaspiration  posterior capsulorhexis  anterior victrectomy.  67% were implanted ,35% had a  secondary implantation Among the  postoperative complications: the strong inflammatory reaction was up to 33% ,18% presented a secondary cataract orthoptic therapy was maintained in 90% of patients visual acuity could be quantified in only 45% of the patients, it varies from count fingers to 20/20

Conclusions:

in most studies, as in ours, bilateral cataracts are the most common  Age of management is an important prognostic factor for visual recovery. if the cataract is obstructive or when the initial rehabilitation of functional amblyopia induced by a cataract did not allow a good recovery, the surgical intervention is required without delay In our study, there is a significant association between age at surgery and incidence of postoperative complications, The best functional results of our series are obtained in partial bilateral cataracts  and occurred late after the age of 6 months
