Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcomes and patient satisfaction of bilateral implantation of EDoF IOL, AT LARA 829 MP, a 12 months follow-up.

Setting:

Single-center retrospective study

Methods:

The surgery was performed using a microincision phacoemulsification technique. The inclusion criteria were patients with visually significant bilateral cataract, expectation on glasses independence but accepting their use for near activities and at least 12 months of follow-up.Patients with any ocular disorders or previous surgery, corneal astigmatism over 1.00D or axial length within the extreme range (<21.5mm or >25.5mm) were excluded. The AT LARA 829 MP was implanted bilaterally in 20 patients (7 men and 13 women) with a mean age of 70.9 years old. Main outcomes were visual acuity at distance, intermediate (70cm) and near (40cm), defocus curve and patient’s satisfaction.

Results:

The mean spherical equivalent after surgery was −0.30 ± 0.27 diopters (D). Binocular visual acuities (VA) were: Uncorrected Distance VA 0.17 ± 0.36  logMAR (20/30); Corrected Distance VA 0.03 ± 0.05 logMAR (20/21); Uncorrected Intermediate VA 0.21 ± 0.12 logMAR (20/32); Uncorrected Near NVA 0.25 ± 0.16 logMAR (20/35). The defocus curve confirmed good VA also in the intermediate distance with 90% of the patients presenting VA higher than 20/40 for a defocus curve between +0.5 D and -1.5 D. Patient satisfaction was high, more than 85 % of the patients satisfied with their intermediate and distance vision.

Conclusions:

Activities requiring intermediate vision are of great importance in the daily life of our modern society. This enhanced depth of focus (EDoF) IOLs based on a diffractive optical pattern is indicated for patients whose main focus are distance and intermediate vision. After 12 months of follow-up, the level of satisfaction is still high with good visual outcomes and high spectacle independence. Only 5% of the patients presented visual complaints, representing a reduction when compared to the first evaluation at 3 months postoperatively.
