Development of an online course about 'eye health in primary care' by an ophthalmologist and medicine students for an ophthalmology academic group

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Liga Acadêmica de Oftalmologia (LAOFT-UNIFAL) is an Academical group of Ophthalmology, based on the Federal University of Alfenas (UNIFAL-MG), that includes an Ophthalmologist and Medicine students, to realize activities in this area. They developed an onlone course about ´Eye Health on primay care´, with the purpose to spread the knowledge about basic concepts of Ophthalmology and the most prevalent eye diseases, providing helathy education to a larger group that can have access to this.

Setting:

Federal University of Alfenas, UNIFAL-MG, Alfenas, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Methods:

Development of 15 lessons by the ophthalmologist, Medical Doctor Flávia Beatriz de Andrade Oliveira Ribeiro, with the participation of eight students of the second and fourth semester of the Medicine School, all of them part of LAOFT-UNIFAL. The videos were produced and edited at Centro de Educação Aberta e a Distância (CEAD), at UNIFAL-MG, being released at Brazilian Network of Education and Searching (Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa) and at an open digital plataform (Plataforma Moodle). Results:

Production of the online course about ´´Eye Health on primay care´´, available to access at the Brazilian Network of Education and Searching and Plataforma Moodle, focusing in basic concepts about eye´s Anatomy and Physiology, Ocular repercussions of prevalent diseases in the Primary Care and prevalent ocular diseases, as Diabetic Retinopathy, Hypertensive Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Strabismus and Ophthalmological Urgencies.

Conclusions:

In the current context of the innovation of the medical education, the use of digital media to spread knowledge in a simple and accessible language is a global trend. This course is a landmark, because it is a pioneer initiative that includes a Medical Doctor and Medicine Students to teach about basic concepts of Ophthalmology that can help all kind of professionals of the Health area.
