Efficacy and safety of SMILE in treating middle to high myopia

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of SMILE in the treatment of middle to high myopia with or without astigmatism and also to assess the mid-term refractive stability of this new technique in patients treated in our clinic.

Setting:

Amaoptimex Eyeclinic Bucharest Romania

Methods:

A total of 81 eyes (54 patients) that underwent SMILE for middle to high myopia in our clinic, in the past 18 months were included (from November 2014 till May 2016). Some of them had associated astigmatism 63 eyes. Preoperative, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months follow-up examinations, included: manifest refraction, uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity, corneal thickness, and Pentacam HR to evaluate changes in total corneal refractive power (TCRP).

Results:

The averaged preoperative spherical equivalent was -8,38 D and did not change significantly from 3, 6, 12 and 18 months after surgery. At three month 87% were within �0,5 D and 96 %�1 D of the attempted refraction and similar at 6 months, one year and 18 months postoperatively.

Conclusions:

SMILE appears safe and effective, with good level of refractive accuracy and stability even after the first month, in middle to high myopia. Even though a myopic regression was observe in Pentacam but not in subjective refraction.
