The influence of small incision lenticule extraction on ocular high order aberrations

Purpose:
To evaluate the change in high order aberrations after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Selcuk University
Methods:
70 eyes of 37 patients who underwent SMILE surgery for myopia correction were included in this retrospective study. All patients had complete ophthalmic examination plus anterior, posterior and total measurements of OPD, HOA, coma, spherical aberrations with Sirius (CSO, Florance, Italy) Scheimpflug corneal topography, preoperatively and in postoperative first month. The difference between preoperative and postoperative measurements was evaluated (SPSS 20.0 Inc). A p value of less than 0.05 is considered statistically significant.
Results:
In postoperative first month, OPD decreased in anterior but increased in posterior evaluation, however total amount did not change (p= 0.001, 0.001, 0.082 respectively). High order aberrations, coma and spherical aberration showed significantly increase postoperatively in total, anterior and posterior evaluation of cornea (p< 0.05 for all).
Conclusions:
Small incision lenticule extraction causes an increase in most of the high order aberrations. There is still no ideal refractive surgical method which does not induce aberrations.
