Abstract Details

Purpose:

LASIK is among the most predictable keratorefractive interventions at refractive anomalies and is characterized by high stability of the results in the long-term (over 10 years) period of observation. However, a number of patients have a need for repeated surgical intervention or for enhancing the effect of the first LASIK ametropia correction. The traditional surgical technique of retreatmentafter LASIK includesflap-lifting and PRK. Lifting the flap is often accompanied by epithelium ingrowth and PRK is accompanied by a long rehabilitation period and receiving corticosteroids, possible Â«hazeÂ» development and decreased best-corrected visual acuity.

Setting:

Eximer Eye Center, Moscow, Russian Federation

Methods:

In connection with the need to find new safe and effective approach to the residual refractive error correction after long-term follow after LASIK we tested a new technique of retreatment - Â«FemtoRing CutÂ». Â». The main difference between the proposed method is performing a lateral incision using a femtosecond laser to a depth of 10-15 microns greater than the thickness of the primary corneal flap on the periphery, a diameter of approximately 1 mm smaller.

Results:

We describe two clinical cases with the need for retreatment after LASIK, performed 13 and 17 years ago with a favorable functional effect after re-intervention.

Conclusions:

The main advantages of this approach can be attributed to high technology, speed of visual rehabilitation of the patient and the elimination of intra- and postoperative complications. To determine the indications and contraindications for the use of the aforesaid method further research is needed.
