Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a case of epithelial ingrowth after uneventful small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) surgery.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Selcuk University Konya Turkey

Methods:

A 30-year-old woman underwent small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for myopia correction. The operation was uneventful except some epithelial loosening at the incision sites. Postoperative first day control examination revealed that visual acuity was 20/20 OU with a refraction of -0.25 in OD and -0.25 at 180 in OS. Slit lamp biomicroscopy demonstrated a small epithelial defect at the incision site of right eye. In the first month examination the right cornea had a 1mm area of epithelial ingrowth limited at the incision site, which enlarged to 2.5 mm in three months period.

Results:

Surgical re-intervention was done to peel the epithelial ingrowth and irrigate the interface area. Postoperative medical treatment included topical dexamethasone for 3 weeks. At 6 months after operation, the patient�â�€�™s UCVA was 20/20 and there was no sign of recurrence.

Conclusions:

Interface epithelial ingrowth is a potential complication after SMILE; especially patients with loose epithelium should be followed closely.
