Refractive lensectomy for high myopia in elderly patients

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety of the procedure and its effect on Quality of vision and thus on Quality of life in patients with high Myopia

Setting:

Alakh Nayan Mandir Eye Institute India

Methods:

In this Retrospective study a total of 100 eyes with Myopia of 12 diopter and above and having early lenticular changes and age of 40 years and above were included.All eyes underwent topical 2.2 mm clear corneal temporal phacoemulsification operated by a single surgeon were included.All patients underwent thorough retinal check up by Retinal surgeon and predisposing lesions were lasered15 days prior to surgery.A low power acrylic intraocular lens was implanted in the bag in all cases.Eyes with any other pathology were excluded from this study

Results:

There was a significant improvement in visual acuity in all the patients.All patients had two to three lines of improvement as compared to preoperative best corrected visual acuity.All patients said they had great improvement in their quality of life.There was no intraoperative and postoperative complication.

Conclusions:

A good preoperative work up proper counselling with the patients and accurate Intraocular lens power calculation with meticulous phacoemulsification surgery can result in great patient and surgeon satisfaction in such high myopic patients with presbyopic age group and having early lenticular changes
