Abstract Details
Purpose:
In this comparative prospective case series the subjective optical quality (SOQ) of AT LISA (AT LISAÂ® tri839MP, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) and PanOptix (AcrySofÂ® IQ PanOptixTM, Alcon Research, Fort Worth, TX, USA) trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) was compared.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Goethe University, Frankfurt/Germany.
Methods:
Thirty six eyes (18 patients) had bilateral implantation of either AT LISA or PanOptix trifocal IOL pre-enrolment. Exclusion criteria were previous ocular surgeries, corneal astigmatism of >1.5 diopter, ocular pathologies or corneal abnormalities. Postoperative examination at 3 months included a quality of vision questionnaire (visual analogue scale (VAS) 0 (perfect / no symptoms) 100 (extremely poor / maximal symptom intensity)) asking for evaluation of glare, halos, starbursts, blurred vision and ghosting in three different light conditions, contrast sensitivity (CS) testing, manifest refraction; monocular and binocular uncorrected (UCVA) and distance-corrected (DCVA) visual acuity (4 m, 80 cm, and 40 cm); slit-lamp examination.
Results:
Monocular DCVA at distance, intermediate and near was -0.05 Â± 0.08 logMAR, 0.02 Â± 0.09 logMAR, 0.03 Â± 0.11 logMAR for the AT LISA IOL and -0.06 Â± 0.07 logMAR, 0.14 Â± 0.15 logMAR, 0.03 Â± 0.08 logMAR for the PanOptix IOL. There was no significant difference in halos and glare between the two groups under photopic, high-mesopic and low-mesopic conditions (p>0.05). However, starbursts are significantly less in the PanOptix group (p<0.05) under photopic conditions. Under low and high mesopic conditions there is no difference (p>0.05) regarding starbursts. Inter-group comparison of total SOQ and CS were not significantly different (p>0.05).
Conclusions:
Total subjective optical quality was rated to be good for both lenses. This study showed no significant difference between the AT LISA and PanOptix trifocal IOL regarding total subjective optical quality and CS under photopic, mesopic and glare under mesopic conditions. All optical phenomena showed no difference except starbursts under photopic conditions (PanOptix better than AT LISA). Both trifocal IOLs showed good visual performance at far, intermediate and near distance (> 0.1 logMAR). All patients who received the PanOptix IOL reported spectacle independence while three patients of the AT LISA group used reading glasses.
