Purpose:
TO STUDY CHANGES IN STRUCTURES OF THE ANTERIOR SEGMENT OF RABBIT EYES AFTER THE IMPLANTATION OF THE DEVELOPED CORNEAL INLAYS, MADE OF POLYMER MATERIALS BASED ON HYDROXYETHYLMETHACRYLATE (HEMA) AND OLYGOURETHANMETHACRYLATE (OUMA)
Setting:
S. FYODOROV EYE MICROSURGERY FEDERAL STATE INSTITUTION, MOSCOW, RUSSIAN FEDERATION
Methods:
We formed 3 groups of rabbits.Basic group 1 included 4 rabbits(4 eyes) with corneal inlays made of HEMA.Basic group 2-4 rabbits(4 eyes) with inlays made of OUMA. Control group 3 included the second eyes (8 eyes) of experimental animals from groups 1 and 2,without implantation of the inlay.We carry out mechanical delamination of middle layers of the stroma by straight knife forming a corneal pocket with subsequent implantation.2 months after operation we made explantation of the inlay in basic groups. We used biomicroscopy of the anterior segment of the eye, confocal and light microscopy after both operations (implantation and explantation)
Results:
2 MONTHS AFTER THE OPERATION ALL EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS HAD TRANSPARENT CORNEA.ON CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY IN ALL GROUPS WE VISUALIZED PSEUDOKERATINIZATION OF THE EPITHELIUM, SINGLE COLLAGEN FIBERS,ACTIVATION OF KERATOCYTES;HYPERREFLETION AND HYPOCELLULARITY, OPACITY OF THE EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX AROUND THE LENS IN BASIC GROUPS. ON LIGHT MICROSCOPY WE FINDED THE ACTIVATION OF KERATOCYTES, COMPACTING OF STROMA.AFTER THE EXPLANTATION RABBITS` CORNEAS STAYED TRANSPARENT.ON CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY IN BASIC GROUPS WE VISUALIZED FORMING OF THE STROMAL PSEUDOCELLULAR MEMBRANE IN PROJECTION OF THE INLAY.ON LIGHT MICROSCOPY WE FINDED INTERFACE IN STROMA WITH ACTIVATED KERATOCYTES AROUND IT.IN GROUP 1 ALL CHANGES WERE MORE EXPRESSED.IN CONTROL GROUP-WITHOUT VISIBLE CHANGES.
Conclusions:
DEVELOPED INLAYS DID NOT CAUSE SEVERE INFLAMMATORY REACTIONS OF THE RABBITS` EYES.2 MONTHS AFTER OPERATION WE REVEALED REACTION OF CORNEAL TISSUE ON CORNEAL POCKET FORMING AND IN BASIC GROUPS ON THE IMPLANT, ON BIOMICROSCOPY CORNEA STAYED TRANSPARENT.STROMAL PSEUDOCELLULAR MEMBRANE DISPROVED ABSOLUTE REVERSIBILITY OF THE INLAY IMPLANTATION.DEVELOPED CORNEAL INLAYS MADE OF OUMA ARE MORE BIOCOMPATIBLE WITH RABBIT`S CORNEA THAN MADE OF HEMA BECAUSE OF TECHNOLOGY OF MAKING (TURNING - HEMA,PHOTOPOLYMERIZATION - OUMA)
