Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the relationship between structural and functional measurements in the macular area in operated patients for high myopia.
Setting:
Instituto de Oftalmologia Dr. Gama Pinto
Methods:
A cross-sectional observational study in which 29 eyes of 20 myopic patients underwent lens surgery were included. Clinical characteristics, such as age, best corrected visual acuity, refractive error and other pathological conditions and surgeries were considered. Choroidal thickness and macular retinal sensitivity were analyzed (modified ETDRS grid) using Topcon DRI OCTÂ® (Topcon, Inc.) and MP-3Â® Micro-meter (Nidek, Inc). Statistical correlation analysis (Spearman) was performed between the variables of interest.
Results:
Patients mean age was 64.3 (11.8). The mean spherical power was 9.83 (4.1) diopters before surgery and best corrected visual acuity was 73.6 (12.9) ETDRS letters after surgery. Mean choroidal central thickness was 114.8 Î¼m (129.9) and the central retinal sensitivity was 23.8 (3.7). Choroidal thickness was thinnest in the nasal zone, followed by the lower, central, temporal and superior areas. We identified a significant statistical correlation (p <0.05) between the central macular retinal sensitivity and the choroidal thickness in all evaluated sectors, with a stronger correlation with the thickness of the nasal sector at 0.5 Î¼m (r = 0.621).
Conclusions:
In highly myopic eyes, choroidal thickness is strongly and directly correlated with the central macular sensitivity.
