Cataract phacoemulsification with toric intraocular lenses for post-penetrating keratoplasty astigmatism

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the effectiveness of toric intraocular lense (IOL) implantation in the management of astigmatism after penetrating keratoplasty (PKP).
Setting:
Ondokuz May�Ä�±s University, Samsun/Turkey
Methods:
Patients with prior PKP surgery and high regular astigmatism underwent phacoemulsification and implantation of a single-piece toric hydrophobic acrylic IOL (Tecnis Toric; AMO).
Results:
The study enrolled 10 eyes of 9 patients. The mean follow-up was 11 �Â�± 23 months. The mean IOL cylinder power was 19.27 �Â�± 2.8 diopters (D). The mean refractive spherical equivalent and the mean refractive astigmatism decreased significantly (both P<.01). There was a significant improvement in the mean uncorrected distance visual acuity and in the mean corrected distance visual acuity from preoperatively to the last follow-up (both P<.01).
Conclusions:
Implantation of toric IOLs during cataract surgery after PKP was safe and significantly effective method for reducing corneal astigmatism and improving visual acuity in patients with high regular preoperative topographic astigmatism.
