Rotational stability and visual outcome after implantation of the PreciSal aspheric toric intraocular lens

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual and refractive outcomes and rotational stability of the PreciSal aspheric toric intraocular lens (IOL) for the correction of corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery.

Setting:

Private practice. Vision Clinic Center, Geneva, Switzerland

Methods:

Prospective study including 15 consecutive eyes of 11 patients (mean age: 67.6) with a visually significant cataract and corneal astigmatism �â�‰�¥ 1.5 D and undergoing uncomplicated cataract surgery with implantation of PreciSal aspheric toric IOL (MBI). Visual, refractive, and keratometric outcomes as well as IOL rotation were evaluated during a 1-month follow-up. No exclusion criteria were applied in order to avoid bias. Axis of the lens was assessed postoperatively using the NIDEK OPD Scan III (NIDEK Co Ltd.) at day 1, and day 30.The one-month postoperative best visual acuity (BCVA) was determined by subjective refraction.

Results:

At final follow-up, the mean preoperative keratometric cylinder was 2.41 D (range 1.5 to 3.25 D) and the mean postoperative refractive cylinder was 0.44D (range 0 to 0.75). At day one, the mean axis misplacement was 6.3�Â�° (range 0 to 12�Â�°). At one month, the mean IOL rotation was 1.2�Â�° (range 0 to 3�Â�°). None of the IOLs required realignment. Data analysis of the predictability of postoperative SE in the range of �Â�±0.5D demonstrated that 85% of the eyes implanted were within this range.

Conclusions:

Cataract surgery with implantation of the PreciSal aspheric toric IOL is an effective method of refractive correction in eyes with corneal astigmatism due to the good IOL positional stability, and to the forgiving of some axis misplacement.
