Comparison of visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and higher order aberrations between bifocal intraocular lenses and trifocal intraocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and higher order aberrations between bilateral bifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) (Restor �.0 diopters (D) and bilateral trifocal IOL (PanOptix).

Setting:

Bayindir Hospital, Ankara, Turkey

Methods:

This prospective, non-randomized comparative study included 24 eyes of 12 patients who underwent cataract surgery with implantation of premium IOLs. Restor �.0 D IOL implanted in 12 eyes of 6 patients and PanOptix trifocal IOL implanted in 12 eyes of 6 patients. Ophthalmological evaluation included the measurement of uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA), and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA), contrast sensitivity and higher order aberrations.

Results:

There were no significant differences in UDVA and CDVA be�Â�¬tween groups (P > .05). With respect to DCNVA and DCIVA, Panoptix showed better results compred to Restor. Contrast sensitivity and higher order aberrations improved postoperatively and they were similar between groups (P > .05).

Conclusions:

Restor and Panoptix showed comparable improvement in distance visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and higher order aberrations. Panoptix exhibited a better intermediate vision and near vision compared to Restor.
