Functional results following Tecnis low add implantation of diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses in mixed configuration: 2 years observation

Purpose:

Evaluation of visual function, through the 24 months following bilateral cataract surgery and implantation diffractive intraocular lenses Tecnis low-add ZKB00 and ZLB00 in �â�€�žmix & match�â�€� configuration

Setting:

Visum Clinic, Rzeszow, PolandDepartament of Ophtalmology, Medical University in Silesia, Katowice, Poland

Methods:

Twenty patients (40 eyes) underwent bilateral cataract surgery with implantation Tecnis ZKB00 and Tecnis ZLB00 intraocular lenses. Power of the IOL was calculated for emmetropia in both eyes , Tecnis ZKB00 (add �,75D) was implanted in dominant eye and Tecnis ZLB00 (add�,25D) in fellow eye. Several visual parameters was evaluated ,binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA),best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), uncorected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA ), best reading distance (BRD), contrast sensitivity in photopic and mesopic conditions, independence from glasses, visual adverse symptoms, patient�â�€�™s satisfaction, defocus curve and postoperative complications.

Results:

We achieved excellent results for far, intermediate and near distances. After 24 months ,mean values UCDVA-0,98 decimal, UCIVA- 0,74/70cm, UCNVA-0,50/40cm on Snellen charts. Best reading distance was 39,75cm, About 80% treated patients became totally from glasses, 45% patients complained of adverse visual effects in mild level.Most patients were very satisfied with the visual outcome (VF-14 test) VF-14=96,34%. Contrast sensivity measured in photopic conditions were within the normal age limits. Contrast sensitivity in mesopic conditions was below normal age limits . Defocus curve was reduced between far and near distances but visual acuity was 0.8 or better through all examined distance.

Conclusions:

Cataract surgery with implantation of intraocular lenses with low addition to near vision Tecnis ZKB00 i ZLB00 in �â�€�žmix and match' configuration brought patients excellent improvement of visual function and increased satisfaction with the achieved vision for all distances.The �â�€�žMix and Match�â�€� method allowed patients to have high independence from having to wear glasses. At the same time side effects were very low and acceptable. Very good quality of vision achieved during the first month after surgery continued throughout the foollow-up exams in 3, 6, 12 and 24months.
