Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the visual acuity (VA) outcomes and ocular optical performance of eyes with either the PanOptix (Alcon) trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) or with the Symfony (AMO) extended range of vision IOL.
Setting:
Oftalvist CIO Jerez, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
Methods:
Sixty-eight eyes of 34 patients (age 44 to 76) were divided into two groups: 20 patients with the PanOptix IOL and 14 patients with the Symfony IOL. Binocular corrected distance VA (CDVA), distance corrected intermediate VA (DCIVA) at 80 and 60cm, and distance corrected near VA (DCNVA) at 40 cm were evaluated. Additionally, Preferred Reading Distance (PRD) and the VA at that distance, binocular defocus curve, mesopic and photopic contrast sensitivity (CS), halometry and total high order aberration (HOA) by ray tracing were also measured.
Results:
The visual outcomes for PanOptix and Symfony groups were respectively the following: CDVA: -0.03Â±0.03 and -0.02Â±0.03; DCIVA at 80 cm: 0.06Â±0.06 and 0.06Â±0.04; DCIVA at 60 cm: 0.06Â±0.10 and 0.05Â±0.04; DCNVA: 0.04Â±0.06 and 0.20Â±0.07 (p0.001) LogMAR units. Similar PRDs were found for both groups (37.0Â±4.6 and 38.9Â±5.7 cm, respectively). The VAs at those distances were 0.09Â±0.08 and 0.19Â±0.08 logMAR (p0.001), respectively. The defocus curves showed significantly better outcomes for PanOptix IOL from -2.0 to -4.0 D (p<0.001). No differences were found for CS, halometry and HOA.
Conclusions:
PanOptix and Symfony IOLs showed good and comparable visual performance at distance and intermediate. However, PanOptix IOL provided significantly better visual acuity at near and at preferred reading distance and showed a more continuous range of vision than Symfony IOL
