Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare contralateral implantation of .25D and .0D add diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) with bilateral implantation of .0D add diffractive multifocal IOL.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Tokyo Dental College Suidobashi Hospital

Methods:

The prospective study included 54 eyes of 27 patients who received multifocal IOLs bilaterally. In the first eye, a .0D added diffractive multifocal IOL (ZMB00, AMO) was implanted. For the second eye, .0D (MM group) or .25D (ZLB00, AMO; ML group) added IOL was selected according with patientâ€™s preference of working distance. MM group included11 patients, and ML group included 16. Uncorrected and distance corrected binocular logMAR visual acuity (VA) for distance and intermediate-to-near (1m, and 50, 40 and 30cm), stereo vision, and contrast sensitivity were assessed 3 month or later postoperatively.

Results:

The mean uncorrected (distance corrected) binocular VAs of MM/ML groups were -0.100/-0.132(-0.170/-0.178) for distance, 0.028/0.022 (0.030/0.004) for 1m, 0.074/0.007 (0.057/-0.027) for 50cm, 0.089/0.021 (0.005/-0.016) for 40cm, and 0.068/0.065 (0.068/0.061) for 30cm; 50cm distance corrected binocular VA of the ML group was significantly better (P =0.015). The stereo vision of MM/ML group was 114.6/78.8 second with no significant difference. The contrast sensitivities of both groups were in the normal ranges at all spatial frequencies.

Conclusions:

Contralateral implantation served benefits of two different additional power and would be effective for expanding the working distance.
