Biometric analysis and refractive outcomes of cataract surgeries performed by implantation of trifocal IOL

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the effect of biometric variables on the refractive outcomes of cataract surgeries performed by implantation of trifocal IOL.

Setting:

VeniVidi Eye Hospital - Istanbul

Methods:

Fifty-one eyes of 26 patients with cataracts were enrolled in the study. Exclusion criteria were previous ocular surgery, corneal and retinal diseases. Axial length (AL), keratometric readings, and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were assessed with IOL-Master�Â�®. Trifocal IOLs (Alcon Panoptics�Â�®) were implanted by targeting emmetropia. Final refractive outcomes were recorded.

Results:

The mean age was 58.70 �Â�± 10.00 years (range 48-75 years). AL was 23.36 �Â�± 0.94 mm and ACD was 3.17 �Â�± 0.33 mm. Pre-operative overall astigmatism and spherical refractions were 0.81 �Â�± 0.91 D and 1.61�Â�± 1.51 D respectively. The mean K readings were 43.18 �Â�± 1.57 D and 43.76 �Â�± 1.68 D. The mean IOL power was 22.48 �Â�± 2.34 D. Post-operative overall astigmatism and spherical refractions were 0.66 �Â�± 0.57 D and 0.41�Â�± 0.72 D respectively. All patients were satisfied with their distant and near visual acuities.

Conclusions:

In order to obtain adequate refraction results, distinct attention should be drawn to ophthalmologic biometric parameters at the time of cataract surgery. Trifocal multifocal IOL provided visual satisfaction despite the existence of minor residual refractive errors.
