Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare far and near visual acuity after trifocal Intraocular (IOL) implant with femtolaser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) an manual phacomulsification.

Setting:

Instituto de Olhos Dr. RogÃ©rio Horta, Rio de janeiro, Brazil.

Methods:

Proper patient selection was based in fundus tomography (OCT), Optical Biometry (Lenstar R), slit-lamp examination, especular microscopy, corneal topography and counseling with pros and cons. From June, 29th 2016 to February, 15th 2017, 52 eyes of 29 patients underwent trifocal Iol implant (Panoptix R) by one surgeon (RH). In 36 eyes (Group 1) Flacs ( Lensex-Alcon) were used, and in 16 cases (Group 2), we performed manual Phacoemulsification. After one month, we measured the far and near uncorrect visual acuity, and compared the 2 groups.

Results:

26 eyes, were right and 26 left ones. The average age was 64,82 YO (45-84).The average IOL power was 21,65 D (13,0-26,0).18 female and 11 male patients. In 2 eyes of one patient, a combined Flacs and pars plana vitrectomy was performed in order to treat a vitreous degeneration with a minor opacity that could interfere with the result. All the patients of the 2 groups achieved 20/30 or better to far, and Jaegger 1 or better for near.Only 2 patients, one of each group, complained about halos.

Conclusions:

The trifocal IOL ( Panoptix -R) performance was excellent for far and near in both Flacs and manual Phacoemulsification.A proper patient selection and counseling are necessary to achieve that result. We continue to collect new patients to enhance the statistical relevance.
