Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the 1 year post-operative visual outcomes with a rotationally asymmetric multifocal intraocular lens (MFIOL) design (SBL-3, Lenstec Barbados Inc. ï£¨) implanted bilaterally in patients undergoing refractive lens exchange. This is a dual optic, bi-aspheric acrylic IOL with a .0 dioptre (D) near add.
Setting:
site for eyes private clinic, Sunderland Eye Infirmary, UK
Methods:
Forty patients (80 eyes), mean age 61 years (range 47-76 years) underwent refractive lens exchange surgery by a single surgeon with bilateral SBL-3 implantation and were recalled for review 1 year following surgery. Pre- and post-operative data collection included manifest refraction, monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA). In addition, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), distance corrected near vision (DCNVA), best corrected near vision (BCNVA) and binocular UDVA and UNVA were also measured. Operative and post-operative complication rates were recorded, together with patient satisfaction.
Results:
Pre-operative manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) was .72 Â±2.15D (-6.50 to .13D). Thirty patients (75%) attended for review. Post-operative MRSE was -0.05 Â± 0.40D. 95% of eyes were within Â±1.0D and 78% within Â±0.5D of target refraction. Monocular UDVA was 20/40 or better in 95% of eyes and 20/20 or better in 63%. Binocular UDVA was 20/40 or better in 100% of patients and 20/20 or better in 87%. Binocular UNVA was N5 or better in 82% of patients. Fourteen eyes required YAG laser capsulotomy. 92% of patients were satisfied with their unaided visual outcome for distance and near vision.
Conclusions:
The 1 year visual outcomes results are encouraging and the Lenstec SBL-3 Â® holds promise as an effective way to improve both unaided distance and near vision in patients undergoing refractive lens exchange surgery. Optimisation of biometry constants should help to further enhance outcomes.
