Miyake-Apple posterior view analysis of capsular bag behavior of the new Clareon hydrophobic acrylic IOL material

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The objective was to evaluate the new Alcon Clareon SY60WF Intraocular Lens (IOL) material using the Miyake Apple Posterior View Technique in autopsy eyes in terms of capsular bag behavior such as posterior capsule striae and design fitting of the haptics

Setting:

David J. Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

The Clareon IOLs were tested using the Miyake-Apple posterior video technique in human autopsy eyes. Photographic image analysis included capsular bag behavior such as posterior capsule striae and design fitting of the haptics.

Results:

Implantation analysis of the two IOL models revealed similar biomechanical properties. When comparing capsular bag fitting and stretching of the bag equator the Clareon IOL seems to be superior to the Acrysof material due to slightly softer biomechanical material properties. Clareon showed less striae of the posterior capsule and a better arc of contact to the equator region of the capsular bag.

Conclusions:

With the new Clareon material Implantation behavior was equivalent to the current Acrysof IOL. Clareon material seemed to be slightly softer thus causing less posterior capsule striae and distortions.
