Abstract Details

Purpose:

Tecnis Symfony is an intraocular lens with enlarged depth of focus. It enables very good visual quality for far and intermediate distances, and quite good visual acuity for reading. It is one piece hydrophobic acrylate IOL.Authors are presenting the results of the visual quality 3 months after the Tecnis Symfony intraocular lens implantation.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department of the Central Military Hospital and First Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague

Methods:

We examined 32 eyes of 16 patients (11 men, 5 women). The mean age of patients was 60 years. Patients passed very precise examination before the cataract surgery. The patients suffered only with cataract, any other eye disease was excluded. Standard surgery was proceeded. All surgeries passed without complications. We evaluated the value of sphere, cylinder, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA) and the curve of defocuse (ETDRS charts) after the surgery. Standardized contrast sensitivity was measured (VectorVision). Standardized questioner was filled out from all patients.

Results:

The mean sphere before the surgery was 1.28+/-6.99 D and after the surgery -0.48+/- 0.62 D. There was no statistically significant change of cylinder value before 0.50+/- 0.35 D, and after the surgery 0.59+/- 0.29 D. Mean UCDVA 3 months after the surgery was 0.92, UCIVA 0.90 and UCNVA 0.46. Contrast sensitivity was only minimally under the normative values. There was no PCO 3 months after the cataract surgery. The satisfaction with the quality of vision after the Tecnis Symfony implantation was high. Patients complaint only about the quality of the night vision, halo and glare.

Conclusions:

Intraocular lens with enlarged depth of focus Tecnis Symfony (Abbott) gives the patients perfect possibility of far and intermediate visual acuity and satisfying ability of reading. The mean grade of evaluation in scale 1-10 (1 minimum, 10 maximum) was 9.
