Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate clinical performances and visual acuity tolerance to postoperative refractive errors of extended range of vision intraocular lens(IOL) (Tecnis® Symfony ZXR00) and monofocal IOL (Tecnis® ZCB00).

Setting:

Prospective clinical study, Department of Ophthalmology, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea

Methods:

This study was performed in 120 age-related cataract eyes (Tecnis® Symfony ZXR00 60 eyes vs Tecnis® ZCB00 60 eyes) with preoperative corneal astigmatism less than 1 diopter (D). The following outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at 1 month and 3 months postoperatively: uncorrected distant visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distant visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity(UIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), refraction, contrast sensitivity, topography, corneal aberration, axial length, reading speed test and subjective questionnaire. Both IOL groups were divided by two ocular parameters, according to UDVA and postoperative spherical equivalent (SE), into 3 groups each.

Results:

Tecnis® Symfony ZXR00 showed comparable UDVA and CDVA results to Tecnis® ZCB00 and significantly better UIVA and UNVA results than Tecnis® ZCB00 with extended range of defocus curves. Tecnis® Symfony ZXR00 provided high level of spectacle independence and satisfaction especially in near vision. Better visual acuity tolerance to postoperative refractive errors was found in Tecnis® Symfony ZXR00 group.

Conclusions:

Extended range of vision IOL seems to provide remarkable visual outcomes at all distances with higher level of patient satisfaction and spectacle independence, while maintaining better visual acuity tolerance to postoperative refractive errors.
