Visual performance of patients bilaterally implanted with extended-range-of-focus intraocular lens

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyse the objective and subjective visual outcomes of patients bilaterally implanted with extended range of focus intraocular lens.

Setting:

Study was conducted at the Cataract & Refractive Services of The Eye Foundation, Coimbatore, India.

Methods:

Prospective interventional study which included patients who were 18 years or older and bilaterally implanted with extended range of focus multifocal lenses with regular corneal topography and a post operative astigmatism of <0.75D. Any patient with a co-existing ocular morbidity that could affect final visual outcome was excluded. A preoperative corneal topography and aberrometry was done for all patients. Post operatively uncorrected and best corrected distance(UDVA & CDVA), intermediate(IVA) and near vision(UNVA & CNVA) were recorded at 6 weeks and 4 months post operative. A subjective questionnaire was administered to gauge the photic phenomena, spectacle independence and patient satisfaction.

Results:

100 eyes of 50 patients with a mean age of 59.84 �Â�± 11.68 years were included in the study. At 6 months follow up the mean binocular UDVA was 0.86. The Uncorrected near and Intermediate visual acuity was >0.9 in 100% of patients.96.4% of patients did not require glasses for distance and all 100% of patients were free from glasses for intermediate and near vision. Glare and haloes of moderate grade was seen in 6% and 5% respectively. The mean subjective patient satisfaction score (out of 10) for distance intermediate and near vision was 9, 10 & 9 respectively.

Conclusions:

The new extended range of multifocal intraocular lenses gave excellent spectacle independence for distance, intermediate and near vision. The subjective patient satisfaction scores were high for all distances with minimal disturbance from photic phenomena.
