Abstract Details
Purpose:
To analyze the outcomes after implantation of Tecnis® Symfony intraocular lens (IOL), an extended range of vision IOL.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology of a tertiary referral centre in Oporto, Portugal - Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto
Methods:
Prospective ongoing study comprising 30 eyes of 15 patients who had implantation of Tecnis® Symfony intraocular lens after refractive lens exchange. Patients were assessed in the preoperative period and at 1, 3 and 6 months postoperative with macular and retinal nerve fiber layer (RFNL) and optic disc measurements by spectral domain OCT (Heidelberg®); endothelial cell counts; contrast sensitivity both in mesopic and photopic conditions and glare sensitivity at 1, 5 and 100 cd/m2 by Metrovision-MonPack3®. Best corrected and uncorrected visual acuity (BCVA and UCVA) were evaluated. Biometry was assessed using IOLMaster 700®.
Results:
Significantly better UCVA for distance, intermediate and near vision were achieved (p<0.05). Postoperative spherical equivalent was within ±1.00 diopters in all eyes. Binocular UCVA for distance of 20/25 was observed in all eyes. No eye developed cystoid macular edema and there was no significant reduction of RNFL after surgery in any case (p>0.05). There was a mild nonsignificant reduction in endothelial cell count in the first postoperative month (p>0.05). There were no significant variations in contrast sensitivity, in photopic and in scotopic conditions (p>0.05). The results to date suggest an increase of glare at 1 cd/m2 in postoperative period.
Conclusions:
Refractive lens exchange with Tecnis® Symfony intraocular lens implantation provided good visual function and yield good contrast sensitivity under photopic and mesopic conditions, with a minimal level of disturbing photic phenomena. This procedure has few related complications and provides a high degree of satisfaction and spectacles independence both for distance, intermediate and near vision.
