Clinical efficacy of PRL phakic lenses for correcting presbyopia: premarket study

Purpose:

To evaluate efficacy and safety of PRL phacic lenses for correcting presbyopia

Setting:

Dr.Solomatin Eye Center Riga, Latvia

Methods:

This is prospective comparative study. We have recruited patients age range 45-55 years with presbyopia, patients with comorbidities such as (corneal dystrophy, retinal disorders, etc.). All patients underwent standard preoperative examinations, including uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected near visual acuity (UNVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), corrected near visual acuity (CNVA), slit-lamp examination and questionnaire about visual functions and ocular symptoms.All patient underwent same examinations 4 weeks after PRL implantation. PRL phacic lenses were implanted in the non-dominant eye.

Results:

After PRL lenses implantation, there were significant improvement of NVA (J2-J3, for every patient). Binocular visual acuity tests after operation didn't show significant differences comparing before and after implantation results (p=0.25). There were no significant changes of night vision disturbance, according to the questionnaire.

Conclusions:

The PRL phacic lenses increase depth of focus and significantly improve near vision. According to the patient questionnaire PRL lenses do not induce significant side effects. The PRL lenses potential could be a safe and effective treatment for presbyopia
