Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the incidence of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and the neodymium:YAG (nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy rates after phacoemulsification with implantation 3-piece, single-piece C haptics and single-piece plate haptics intraocular lens (IOL)

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Hospital dos LusÃadas, Lisboa - Portugal

Methods:

Retrospective study that included patients who underwent phacoemulsification and IOL implantation: 3-piece IOL- ZA9003 (group I), single-piece IOL with C haptics - ZCB00, SN60D3and ZXR00 (group II) and single-piece plate IOL- Tri839MP ATTorbi709/MP (group III). Surgeries and capsulotomies were performed by the same surgeon. The postoperative follow-up period was at least 2 years. We evaluated demographic data (age and gender); IOL data (type and power), PCO incidence, neodymium:YAG laser capsulotomy rates, time elapsed between surgery and PCO detection and time between surgery and Nd:YAG laser capsulotom

Results:

An Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy was performed in 382 (26,7%) of the 1429 eyes analysed (18,7% in group I; 21,7% in group II and 60,2% in group III). Mean follow-up was 54 months. Average time between surgery and Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was 34 months in group I, 27 months in group II and 24 months in group III. Overall, 1 year and 2 years capsulotomy rate was 18,7%, 2,5%, 6,5% with ZA9003; 11,4%, 1,6%, 8,7% with ZCB00; 50%, 0%, 12,5% with SN60D3;18,9%, 5,7%, 18,9% with ZXR00; 60,6%, 8,8%, 35,4%with Tri839MP and 57,1%, 0%, 12,5% with ATTorbi 709MP.

Conclusions:

No complications were reported after capsulotomies or IOL opacification, however SN60D3 presented glistening, especially with longer follow up, making capsulotomies more difficult. Capsulotomy rate was higher in the single-piece plate haptics group than in the 3-piece and single-piece C haptic group. Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was performed later in the 3-piece IOL group.
