Clinical outcomes after 24 months of a phakic toric intraocular lens implantation

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy, safety and predictability in patients who received a Toric Implantable Collamer Lens with central hole (V4c TICL) to correct low to high myopic astigmatism.

Setting:

Samsung Eye Center, Seoul, South-korea.

Methods:

One-hundred eyes of 58 patients underwent implantation of a V4c TICL (STAAR Surgical Inc) and were followed-up over two years. Pre- and post-operative uncorrected (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refraction and complications were analyzed retrospectively. Mean age was 24.78�Â�±5.28 years. Preoperative mean spherical dioptric power was -7.89�Â�±2.31 diopters(D) and mean cylinder diopter power was -3.01�Â�±0.81D, being mean spherical equivalent was -9.39�Â�±2.42D.

Results:

Preoperative BCVA was 0.87 and UCVA at 24 months post-surgery was 1.19, being the efficacy index 1.37. The spherical equivalent changed from -9.39D to -0.15D at 24 months post-surgery and 99% and 78% of eyes were within �Â�±1.00 and �Â�±0.50D respectively. Astigmatism changed from -3.01D to -0.54D at 24 months and 94% and 57% of eyes were within �Â�±1.00 and �Â�±0.50D. At two-year postoperatively, no case of BCVA loss, no cataract, no IOP spike and no significant endothelial cell count changes were noted. In two cases, the lens was rotated. Of the 2, one was replaced with another TICL.

Conclusions:

Our two-year follow up results showed that V4c Toric ICL implantation was a safe, effective and predictable procedure to correct low, moderate and high myopic astigmatism.
